Annual Report - Free Spirit

St. Mary's Music Group

Guitar2010 has proved to be another successful year for Free Spirit. We currently have 13 members in the group, consisting of 8 instrumentalists and 5 singers.

Our main ministry continues to be providing music and worship for the 9.30am monthly Family Eucharist and the 6pm 'Time and Space' service on the second Sunday of the month. With the greater number of instrumentalists that we now have, we can add much more depth and spirituality to our music, using harmonies, descants and fanfares.

The spring of 2010 saw us leading the worship for the Women's World Day of Prayer and also the Zimbabwe evening in St. Mary's. We also led the worship at Caterham Scouts St. George's Day service, held outdoors in Caterham Valley. In the summer we were delighted to provide the musical worship for the baptism of Daniel, son of our guitarist Tim and soprano/alto singer Yvonne. Then, in the autumn, it was a privilege to play at the wedding blessing of Alan and Lyn.

Christmas was a busy time for Free Spirit, as we played at the Christingle service and the carol service for SANDS, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity. We also played carols at the Douglas Brunton Centre on Christmas Day for those who attended the lunch there. More recently, the group played a part in the very successful concert which raised funds for Ellie's gap year and the church hall refurbishment.

We would like to thank all of you who have given us words of encouragement during the year - it is really appreciated by us all. Thanks must go to everyone in the group for their contribution, and also we'd like to thank Barbara for preparing the Sunday morning hymn sheets.

We are a happy and sociable group, and are always pleased to welcome new people. If you like our music and feel that you would like to contribute, then do please come and have a chat with one of us. We would particularly welcome any woodwind or stringed instrumentalists, but do let us know if you have any musical or singing talent that you would like to share as part of the worship of the church. We would also be very grateful for a volunteer sound engineer! We meet on Tuesdays at 8pm in the St. Paul's centre to practise and you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome.
